Services for John R. Atkison, 78, of Wagoner were at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 at the Mallett Funeral Home Chapel in Wagoner with the Rev. Carl Murphy officiating. John R. Atkison was born May 14, 1930 in Cherokee to his parents, Robert and Georgia (Still) Atkison. After school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, a career lasting more than 20 years. He became a finance officer for several different Muskogee area companies including Beneficial Co. and Aetna. He was a dedicated member of the Lion's club and the Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in organizing Summerfest and the Children's Games for many years. He also served as a Crossing Guard at Ellington Elementary for a few years. He died on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009 in Owasso. He is survived by his wife, Berry Atkison of the home; his children, Paula Bowley of Muskogee, Jeannie Armbruster of Richmond, Texas, Johnny Atkison of Owasso, Duane Atkison of Tahlequah, Phillip Atkison of Allen, Texas and Melanie LaBar of Plano, Texas; a half-sister, Betty Pearson of Quinton; a half-brother, Bobby Atkison of Wichita Kans.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. Pallbearers were David Cruce, Ken Burgett, Randy Pofahl, Justin O'Dell, Keith Moses and Russell Pofahl. Arrangements and interment in Pioneer Cemetery in Wagoner with military rites performed by the Tinker Air Force Base Honor Guard were directed by Mallett Funeral Home of Wagoner.
