Funeral services for Juanita Maxine Bliss, 70, Freedom, will be held in the Freedom School Auditorium today at 2 p.m. Rev. Frank Mitchell, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Fort Cobb, will officiate. Interment follows in the Freedom Cemetery.
Juanita Maxine, daughter of Cecil and Hazel (Pray) Thompson was born on February 13, 1925, at Protection, KS. She passed away on December 24, 1995 at Southwest Medical Center in Oklahoma City after a long, hard-fought battle with diabetes.
While a small child, the family moved to the Mound Ridge area northwest of Freedom where she attended the Mound Ridge Rural Grade School. They later moved north of Camp Houston where she attended the Freedom School and graduated with the class of 1941.
Maxine was married to Vernon Bliss on April 12, 1942, at Clovis, NM. To their marriage three sons: Con, Dale, Ron, and a daughter, Candi, were born.
Following their marriage, they lived in Richmond, CA., where she worked in the shipyards and Montgomery Wards. In 1949, they moved to the farm northwest of Freedom where she worked at the Freedom Farmers Coop, was a Stanley Home Products dealer for over 40 years, and beginning in 1977 worked at the Wal-Mart store until her retirement.
Maxine was a member of the Lookout Church, the Lookout Club, the Freedom American Legion Auxiliary and a life member of the Freedom Museum.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Rose (Thompson) Hackney, and an infant brother.
Maxine is survived by her husband, Vernon of the home, a daughter Candi Thrash of Moore: three sons, Con and Allison of Huntington Beach, CA.; Dale and Cindy of Oklahoma City; and Ron and Janet of Mustang; eight grandchildren; Marty and Justin Bliss; Christi and Jim Prvor; Trent and Tyson Bliss; Mindi and Courtney Thrash; and Alan Pickens; and four great grandchildren, Mallory and Shelby Pryor, Danielle and Katelyn Bliss;
She is also survived by a brother and his wife, Cecil and Mildred Thompson Jr. of Waynoka; three brothers-in-law and their wives: Vernie and Jeanette Hackney of Alva; Jess and Helen Bliss, and Lester and Dorothy Bliss of Bakersfield, CA.; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Contributions may be made in her memory to the Freedom Ambulance Service.
