Birth: 1843
Death: 1915

George was born in the Valley of Sinking Creek, Virginia, to James Stafford Givens and Elizabeth Ross Givens. When the nation plunged into Civil War, George and 3 of his brothers enlisted. George Edward spent the entire period as a musician and detailed to the ambulance service. Of the 4 enlisted Givens brothers, only George returned alive from the war. By 1872 George, his wife Malisa Ann [nee Albert], and four children had relocated from Sinking Creek, Virginia, to Montague County, Texas, near Forestburg. In the late 1890s, George's family along with the families of his older married children emigrated north to the Indian Territory near Duncan, Oklahoma. Several years later, they all settled permanently in what is now Tillman County, Oklahoma, near the town of Frederick. After several successive deaths in his family, including daughter-in-law Addie and George's wife Malisa, George ended his own life on his farm.

[Note: An 1864 letter written by George to his father is in the Library of Virginia's Archived Manuscripts. Also in the Library of Virginia are letters written to George's father by a close relative and by a military official. Facsimiles and transcriptions of these archived letters are reproduced in A GIVENS - HALL FAMILY HISTORY FROM PRE-REVOLUTIONARY TIMES TO 1970 and in THE TEXAS-OKLAHOMA CLAN OF DANIEL GIVENS DESCENDANTS, both books compiled by Dorothy Hall Givens.]
