William "Bill" Assell
William "Bill" Assell, age 55, of Centerville, IA, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass. He was born the son of Herman P. and Catherine T. (Marx) Assell on August 19, 1947 in Aurora, IL. He graduated from. St. Mary's High School in Crystal Lake, IL. He received a B.A. in Psychology/Philosophy from Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, IA in 1969 and a M.S. in Health Services Administration from the University of Saint Francis in Joliet, IL in 1985. He was united in marriage to Carla Sevelk on August 26, 1978 at Clutler, IA.
Bill was President and CEO of Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, IA from February, 1988 to the present. During his tenure, he initiated a new hospital based ambulance service with the negotiated cooperation of city and county government. He initiated a successful hospital based home health agency and hospice service and initiated a telemedicine service and service in leadership position in the Midwest Rural Telemedicine Consortium. He helped create the "Legacies Foundation" which generated $100,000 in contributions in 1995, the first year of operations. Contributions to date have exceeded $1,500,000.
In 1996, in collaboration with four other hospitals and a private social services organization, he created the Center for Behavioral Services to bring mental health services to Southern Iowa. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1996-2000 and was a Board Member from 2000 to the present. He initiated discussions resulting in the creation of a major Assisted Living Complex and accepted donation of the 17,000 square foot Recreation Center. The facility was renovated and reopened as the Mercy Life and Fitness Center. In 1999, the hospital completed a $3.1 million construction/renovation project, which included a Medical Office Building, surgery suites and birthing rooms.
Prior to moving to Centerville, he was Administrator at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO from January, 1986 to February, 1988, Acting Administrator at the Louise Burg Hospital in Chicago, IL from February, 1984 to December, 1985. He was the Personnel Director at Des Moines General Hospital in Des Moines, IA from May, 1976 to January 1984.
Bill has served on several committees and task forces with the Iowa Hospital Association of which he was President-elect for 2003; Diplomat for the American College of Healthcare Executives; board member of the National Rural Health Association, American Hospital Association and Governing Council of the Section for Smaller or Rural Hospitals in 2002.
Locally, he was a member of the Centerville Chamber of Commerce where he served on the Board of Directors 1989-1996 and as President in 1991, Appanoose County Industrial Corporation Board of Directors Member 1995 to present, served as Operation Santa Chairperson from 1993-2001, Centerville-Appanoose Recreation Center Board Member 1992, Centerville Rotary Club, Centerville for Behavioral Services Board of Director, Named Centerville Citizen of the year in 1998 and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Tom Assell.
He is survived by his wife, Carla Assell of Centerville, IA; two sons, Greg Assell of Cedar Rapids, IA and Chris Assell of Centerville, IA; two brothers, Larry Assell and his wife, Kathy of Williston, VT and Jerry Assell and his wife, Marci of Hamilton, OH: and two sisters, Ruth Assell of Nicholsville, KY and Kathy Neuenkirchen and her husband, Dean of North Aurora, IL; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville, IA with Father Joe Miller C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville, IA.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, IA and from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Church in Centerville with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be given to The Legacies Foundation at Mercy Medical Center and may be left at or mailed to the Schmidt Family Funeral Homes, 501 North 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
