SELMA B. BIERMA
Selma B. Bierma, 89 of DeMotte, IN, passed away August 12, 2011 at Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso, IN.
Selma was born March 16, 1922 in Columbus, MT to William and Jessie (Staal) Ricker. Shortly after her birth, Selma moved to Highland, IN then moved to Demotte, IN in 1929. In 1939, she graduated from the Demotte High School. During WWII she worked as a stencil maker for Kingsbury Ordance Plant. Prior to the war, she worked for several years at Art Lageveen's Store.
On March 22, 1946, she married Raymond John Bierma. Raymond and Selma have five children: John Bierma of DeMotte, IN, Hope Terpstra of DeMotte, IN, Richard (Jewyl) Bierma of Webster, NY, Brian (Kerry) Bierma of Russiaville, IN and Kent (Sharon) Bierma of DeMotte, IN. Selma has 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
She is also survived by two brothers: James (Mary) Recker of DeMotte, IN and William (Corine) Recker of DeMotte, IN; and two step sisters: Dorothy Recker of DeMotte, IN and Connie Recker of Grand Rapids, MI.
Selma was preceded in death by her parents. Selma had been a member of the First Christian Reformed church since moving to DeMotte. At the age of 12, she began playing at the church and did throughout her life. And to everyone's pleasure she played as recently as two weeks ago. Also throughout her life in DeMotte she gave piano lessons to countless youths.
She will be missed dearly.
Visitation will be from 2:00PM to 8:00PM on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Jackson Funeral Service of DeMotte. Funeral Services are at 10:30AM at First Christian Reformed Church on Wednesday, August 17, 2011.
Burial will be at Holland Cemetery in DeMotte, IN.
