Ivar was the son of Torgeir Olsen Aastad, the older brother of Guttorm Aastad. Torgeir was an heir to the Aastad farm in Vestre Slide. Guttorm was the immigrant who started a farm in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. After emigrating, Ivar received his divinity doctorate from Luther College in Iowa. He became a Lutheran bishop in a leadership position for churches in western Minnesota
