AITKIN -- Carl "Bill" W. Carlson, age 81, of Aitkin, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, surrounded by his loving family at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin.

He was born March 16, 1923, in Minneapolis, the son of Sever and Augusta (Karlson) Carlson. He was raised in Turtle Lake, Wis., where he attended schools and he and his siblings sang as a group in the area. He moved with his family to Minneapolis at the age of 11 and he attended Washburn High School. He then worked on a farm for a time. He also worked at his mother's nursing home and that is where he met Lorraine W. Lafferty. They were married on Nov. 18, 1942, in Aitkin. They lived in Aitkin and Bill worked for Aitkin Motor Co. They moved to Minneapolis in 1952 and he worked as a machinist/foreman for Charter Design Co. They continued coming up to Aitkin while they lived in Minneapolis and in 1973 he moved his family back to Aitkin. He then worked for the Aitkin Iron Works retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Pine Lake United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing with Jake's Boys, a band that provides entertainment for nursing home residents and shut-ins.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine Carlson of Aitkin; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Wally Vine of Milwaukee, Linda and Mark Mehrman of Minneapolis, Janet and Steven Anthes of Sioux Falls, S.D., Lori and Keith Bubalo of Brainerd, Minn.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Sharon Carlson of Cedar, Minn., Brad and Elaine Carlson of Aitkin, Brian and Julie Carlson of Aitkin; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Jean Carlson of Gilmer, Texas; a sister, June Cunningham of Glendale, Calif.; and loving nieces, nephews and a host of friends and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joseph and Richard, and an infant son, Richard.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 2 p.m. from the Aitkin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ruth Hograbe officiating. Burial will be in the Bennettville Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin and also an hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are with the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home.
