Chico Record, Thursday Morning, October 23, 1919, pg 1 col 5: Meridian Child Is Burned To Death. Meridian, October 22. – Jeanette Booth, aged 7, was burned to death and her older sister, Mildred, was badly burned about her arms and legs in a fire that destroyed the Booth home, a half mile east of Meridian, about 9 o’clock last night.

While the exact origin of the fire has not been learned, the supposition is that it was caused by the explosion of a drum of gasoline. According to the mother of the girls, who is prostrated with grief, the whole house was a mass of flames in a few seconds.

A.L. Booth, the father, was away at the time of the fire. The mother and the two girls had retired for the night and were asleep when the fire broke out.

The five other children of the family were saved when their parents carried them out of the house.

The charred remains of the younger girl were found beneath the bed in which she was sleeping.
