Alma Jean Burtis

The family of Alma Jean (Zwanziger) Burtis mourns her passing on July 17, 2010 at The Fountains in Yuba City, California. Alma was a retired teacher and she and her husband, Dale Burtis, were walnut ranchers in Meridian.

Alma was born on March 31, 1924 in Weed, California to parents George and Camille (Albee) Zwanziger. She was a great-granddaughter of Senator Abner Edward Weed, founder of the Weed Lumber Company and the town founder of Weed, California.

Alma attended Oregon State College (now known as Oregon State University) where she graduated on June 9, 1946 with a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics. Alma married Robert Dale Burtis of Meridian on June 25, 1949.

Alma taught Home Economics at Sutter, Wheatland and Williams high schools during her 35-year career as a teacher.

Alma is survived by her brother, Roger Zwanziger of Weed; brother-in-law, Clyde Perry of Meridian; and sister-in-law, Betty Lee Perry of Meridian. Alma is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Dale Burtis; her parents, George and Camille Zwanziger; and her sister, Marjorie Moore.

Alma enjoyed cooking, crocheting, traveling and researching family genealogy. Alma was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Meridian Farm Women's Club, and the Sutter County Community Memorial Museum. She attended the Sutter and Meridian Methodist Churches.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, July 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ullrey's Memorial Chapel in Yuba City. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday, July 23, with burial to follow at the Meridian Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to send donations to: Sutter County Community Memorial Museum, 1333 Butte House Road, Yuba City, CA 95993; or Meridian Farm Women's Club Scholarship Fund, 13030 Moroni Road, Meridian, CA 95957.
