Donald Fred Albee
Donald Fred Albee, 89, died March 9, 2011 at the Navy Hospital in San Diego. He was the son of Fred and Eva (Marshall) Albee and graduated from Garden County High School.
Don was married to Leota (Lingerfelt) for 60 years (1947 in Monroe Co., Florida). She preceded him in death. (9 Aug. 1925 – 25 Jan. 2007). He is survived by his sons, Donald and Ron, his sister Doris Brome of Dunellen, New Jersey, brother, Duane (Joyce) of Glendale, Oregon and sister-in-law, Patricia of Denver.
Don began his proud and long naval career on July 9, 1940 at Great Lakes, Illinois and served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. During World War II, he participated in many battles and was part of the capturing party of the German submarine U505, now in Chicago. He served on the USS Oriskany and received the Ney award while in Vietnam.
Ney Award – The Navy awards are named in honor of Capt. Edward F. Ney, head of the subsistence division of the Bureau of Supplies and Account from 1940 until 1945. Award is for Outstanding Food Service.
Don retired from the Navy on November 30, 1970.
After his retirement, he worked in food service management at the San Diego airport, then he attended the Clown University at San Diego State, becoming "Freddie". He enjoyed making children and adults laugh in hospitals, at parades and at special events, until the age of 80. Don was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lemon Grove, California. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 2910 Main Street, Lemon Grove, California or to the American Heart Association.
A memorial service at Glen-Abby Bonita, California is pending.
