Pvt. L.L. Berry, 23, was killed in action on Leyte in the Philippine Islands. He was born west of Seymour on Hawkins Hill, where his parents lived. He attended school at Levelview and Red Springs and was helping his father with the farm until entering the service in September 1942. He was in the ordinance department of the air corps and had been stationed at Great Falls, Montana, Pendleton, Oregon, Stockton, California and Walla Walla, Washington before being sent across in August 1943. He served first in New Guinea and later in the Netherland East Indies. He had been on Leyte since the invasion of the island began.
Survived by his parents; brothers and sisters - Pvt. J.D. Berry, Mrs. D. Laws, Marvin Berry, Mrs. J.A. Lester, Mrs. Lorene Brothers, Billy Wayne Berry, Patricia Ann Berry.
