She was born May 2, 1906, in the Horse Heaven Hills near Prosser, to Peter and Marya Hosko. Early childhood memories were of her mother sweeping the dirt floor of their simple home and decorating a sagebrush bush as the family Christmas tree.
At 18, with teaching certificate in had, she traveled to Tonasket by train to begin a job teaching at the Beeman School in Pine Creek. She married John G. Anliker in 1926. They raised two sets of twins and ranched until moving to Tonasket in 1968.
In the early 50s, due to a shortage of teachers in the area, she enrolled at Central Washington University to upgrade her teaching credentials. She taught in the Tonasket School District as a 4th grade teacher and Elementary Librarian until 1971.
Ell's great joys were her family and her garden. Her English flower garden provided a beautiful setting for countless gatherings. She loved to send visitors home with a hand-picked bouquet of their own.
Ella expressed her artistic nature through a variety of needlecrafts and the art of Ukranian egg decoration taught to her by her mother.
She was an active Garden Club member and served on the Tonasket Public Library board, presiding as chairman during the years the present library was built.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Ellen Colbert of Tonasket; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Joan Anliker of Marrowstone Island; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, a son, John in 1950 and a daughter, Joanne in 1997.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ella Anliker will be held at the Ellisforde Church of the Brethren, March 11, 2000 at 11am.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Tonasket Public Library or the North Valley Nursing Home.
