Police officer Anthony Ellis had planned to work his shift Thursday, then head down to his mom's in Delray Beach for an extended-family gathering and Thanksgiving dinner. But while family members did gather on Thursday, there was no Thanksgiving.
Ellis, 46, was killed Wednesday night when his motorcycle was hit by a car in Mangonia Park. He was off duty at the time of the accident, which was being investigated.
According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office report , a silver Honda Accord turned into his path while Ellis was riding on 45th Street near Australian Avenue. It appears the driver violated Ellis' right of way, the sheriff's office said.
"After it happened, we just decided not to have a Thanksgiving dinner," said Ellis' mother, Bertha. "We planned on having a real large dinner, but then nobody really wanted to do anything."
Ellis, born and raised in Delray Beach and a graduate of Atlantic High School, was a MPO in the West Palm Beach Police Department, where he worked for 17 years. He also served in the Army as a Sergeant for 11 years, doing two tours in Germany.
