CROFT - J. Leroy, age 94, Pioneer Resident of Delray Beach, Florida died on Thursday, October 5, 2000. Mr. Croft was born on December 8, 1905 in White Springs, Florida to Lucius and Gabriela (Goff) Croft. He had been an area resident for the past 75 years after coming to Delray Beach in 1924 at the age of 18 with his family from Sebring, Florida. Mr. Croft was of Baptist faith and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Delray Beach. He was among the Delray Beach "first families" that have been honored by the Delray Beach Chamber Of Commerce, which he has been a member and past President. He was concerned with preserving old Florida history, especially relating to Delray Beach by serving and being a Life Member of the Delray Beach Historical Society and served as City Councilman for 6 years as well as being the Mayor of Delray Beach in 1958. His desire to better the community led him to join the Delray Beach Kiwanis where he had 41 years with perfect attendance. Other memberships include Delray Lodge #1770. Fraternal Order Of The Elks, founding member of the Downtown Development Authority and was Past President of the Bethesda Hospital Association. Mr. Croft married his Wife Bettye (Nordquest) Croft in 1934 and she survives. In 1965, the Croft's built Ace Hardware in Delray Beach, which they operated together until their retirement in 1970. He had been the owner of the Chevron Gas station on Atlantic Avenue and also operated a taxi service for several years. Mr. Croft's Civic accomplishments have been numerous and his drive to keep Delray Beach the "garden spot of Florida" will lone be remembered. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 66 years , Bettye Croft; three brothers, Victor (Dimple) Croft of Niceville, FL, R.C. (Mayme) Croft of High Springs, FL and George Croft of Lantana, FL. Five nieces, Patricia, Mary Alice, Bettye, Janice and Carolyn. Four nephews, Dennis, Kenneth, Darryl and David. Mr. Croft was predeceased by one sister, Etha Merrit and one nephew, Leroy "Bud" Merrit. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. October 11, 2000 at the SCOBEE-IRELAND-POTTER FUNERAL HOME, 300 N.E. Fifth Avenue, Delray Beach, Florida, with Reverend Neil Hickem officiating. Interment will follow at the Delray Beach Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Kiwanis Club Of Delray Beach, Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 122, Delray Beach, FL 33447 or to the First Baptist Church Of Delray Beach, 16333 S. Military Trail, Delray Beach, FL 33484.
