Doris Louise Pruitt Brockington, widow of Dr. William Smith Brockington, died Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenwood, November 16, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Claude Patton & Louise Burnett Pruitt. She was educated in Greenwood public schools, Lander College, and the Greenwood College of Commerce.

Mrs. Brockington spent her working life as a secretary. She was an organizer and charter member of the Emerald Chapter of Professional Secretaries International. She served as its president and was awarded the first "Secretary of the Year" award.

She was an supporter of the Arts Council, the Greenwood-Lander Performing Arts, and the Greewood Community Theater, serving on its Board of Directors. She served on the Board of Directors of the St. Nicholas Speech and Hearing Center, and as president and member of the Board of Directors of the Greenwood Woman�s Club. Mrs. Brockington was a member of the Palladian Study Club and former member and president of the Holly Garden Club.

A member and past president of the Robert A. Waller Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, she was also a member of the Star Fort Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and of the Greenwood Historical Society.

Mrs. Brockington was a breast cancer survivor and was a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society. She was awarded a USC Alumni Association Life Membership for her avid support of the University of South Carolina. She and her late husband were actively involved in the operation of the Greenwood Soup Kitchen. Throughout her life she loved to dance and travel and those who knew her will always remember her smile.

She was a devout and active member of Greenwood First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and elder. She was a Sunday school teacher of the little ones, chairman of the business women circle, a member and moderator of Circle 7, and a long time member of the John Knox Sunday School Class

Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne Reynolds Pyle and her husband, Judge C.V. Pyle, Jr., Greenville; stepson, William S. Brockingston, Jr.(Celeste), Aiken, and their sons, Will & Robert; sister, Hilda P. Harvin (Ben), Greenwood; nieces, Cindy Hoffman, Claudia J. Young, Kim J. Hammett, & Betsy J. Burn;

n addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Betty P. Johnson, Columbia.

Graveside services were conducted Monday, December 7, 2009, in Edgewood Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Dr. David Mayo, and Rev. Dr. George Wilson.

Honorary escorts were active and inactive members of the session and diaconate, the John Knox Sunday School Class and Circle 7; Also Nita Carmichael, Elizabeth Herndon, & Betty Craft.

The Blyth Funeral Home & Crematory Services of Greenwood assisted the family with the arrangements.
