Death: Jun. 10, 2013

Son of Mattie and Irvin M. Brewington.

Earl Wofford Brewington, Sr. passed away June 10, 2013. Mr. Brewington was predeceased by his wife, Betty Coursey Brewington in 2000. Mr. Brewington was born in Laurens County and grew up in Greenwood County. A natural talent for anything mechanical, Mr. Brewington began his career working with several relatives who mentored him. He quickly became a well-known talent in the Greenwood area as an Automobile Mechanic. In his early career Mr. Brewington was known to build and tune some of the most sought-after engines for race teams in the era before the modern NACSAR age. In the 1960s many car enthusiasts would bring their muscle cars to "Mr. B" on Friday afternoon to be sure they were just right for the weekend. In 1966 he was given the opportunity to teach in the newly-created Automotive Technology Department at Piedmont Technical College. He later became Department Head and served until his retirement in 1988. Many of his students remember him as strict and sometimes hard on his classes, for good reason. He is fondly remembered as "Mr. B" to many Automotive Technicians in the Southeast. Several of "Mr. B's" classes won numerous Chrysler MOPAR National Competitions. Although he was sought after to head many current NASCAR teams' engine programs, "Mr. B" chose to end his career at Piedmont Tech. He probably took many of those winning secrets with him yesterday. After his retirement he continued to operate Brewington Antiques on Montague Avenue. He was an accomplished Appraiser and this grew to be his second love after automobiles. Later in life he spent time minding the shop with Betty and they both enjoyed visiting with friends and patrons. He was always happy to share his knowledge of antiques with anyone who stopped by with old items for appraisal or sale. On Monday we lost one of those quiet ones who gave advice sparingly but when he did it was worth your while to take a minute and listen. Mr. Brewington was a member of Greenwood First Baptist Church and in his younger days was active with the Youth and RA Programs. He is survived by his two sons, Earl Brewington, Jr. and his wife Teresa, Mat Brewington and his wife Wanda, grandsons Bob Brewington and Travis Brewington (and his wife, Scotty Brewington) and granddaughter Elizabeth Jones (and her husband, Kyle Jones) and three great-grandchildren, Cash Brewington, Hank Brewington and Levi Jones. Graveside in Edgewood Cemetery. Blyth Funeral Home.
