Birth: May, 1761
Death: Apr. 6, 1807

Historical and portrait painter. Born near Truro in Cornwall, by the age of twelve he had mastered Euclid and opened an evening school for arithmetic and writing. He showed an early talent for drawing and by 1780 he had gained a local reputation for painting portraits. He then went to London where he was introduced as 'the Cornish Wonder' and enjoyed much fashionable patronage. In 1786 he exhibited his first important historical painting, the 'Assassination of james I', and in the following year the 'Murder of Rizzio', the merit of which earned him immediate election as an associate of the Royal Academy, of which he became a full member in 1788.
