Statesman, Author. He served as the Fifth President of Israel from 1978 until 1983. Born to parents of Spanish descent in Pre-State Israel. He served with the Arab Depart of the Haganah, prior to working for the Israeli embassies in Argentina (1949) and Uruguay (1950). He acquired government experienced working as a secretary to Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett and later as head of the Prime Minister's bureau under David Ben-Gurion. In 1965, he was elected to the Knesset and from 1974 util 1977, he served as Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee. He served as President of Israel under Prime Minister Menachem Begin and made history, when he became the first Israeli President to visit an Arab nation, as he accomplished this event in 1980. In spite of high popularity, Navon did not seek a second term as president. He was reelected to the Knesset and served as Minister of Education and Culture from 1984 until 1990. He is the author of the book "The Six Days and the Seven Gates" (1979).
