106 RAF Squadron's Handley Page Hampden I (X3058) aircraft, with an aircrew of four, took off from RAF Coningsby for a night air operation over Munster, Germany. On its return flight back to base X3058 was forced to ditch off the Norfolk coast and all were able to board the life raft. Sadly three of the aircrew perished from the cold before being rescued 16 hours later—the pilot was the only survivor.
The airmen who lost their lives in this incident were-
RAFVR Sergeant Frederick William BAKER,
RAFVR Sergeant Robert William Antony BIDDLECOMBE and
RCAF Flight Sergeant Alexander Granton PATRICK.
