ARNO HARTBAUER, DESCENDANT OF VALLEY SETTLERS, DIES FOLLOWING LENGTHY ILLNESS
Funeral services will be held Saturday in Westcliffe for life-long Valley resident Arno Gerhard Hartbauer. Mr. Hartbauer died April 28, 2003, at his home in Westcliffe following a lingering illness. He was 82.

Mr. Hartbauer was born July 2, 1920, in Cañon City to Louis Carson and Hedwig (Lange) Hartbauer. Mr. Hartbauer's ancestors were among the earliest settlers in the Wet Mountain Valley. His grandparents, the Gerhard Hartbauers and the Leu families, were members of the German Colony that settled here in 1870. As a youngster, Mr. Hartbauer attended the Cotopaxi school and later attended school in Westcliffe. He was a graduate of Custer County High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during WW II. After returning to the Valley, he was a rancher and also was employed as a carpenter and in the road building industry. He served as a Boy Scout leader and was a member of the Valley Saddle Club. Mr. Hartbauer also was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church and had served as a church trustee and on the church finance board. In his spare time, Mr. Hartbauer enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and playing cards. He also loved spending time with his friends and his family.

On April 8, 1955, in Savannah, Mo., he married JoAnn Huffman. She survives, as do three sons and a daughter . . . Also surviving are nine grandchildren . . . .

Mr. Hartbauer was preceded in death by a sister, Carolina Kline, and by an infant brother. Visitation and viewing will be held tomorrow, Friday, May 2, at the Florence Mortuary in Florence. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3, at 10 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Westcliffe, with Pastor Wayne Riddering officiating. Interment will follow at the family plot at the Hope Lutheran Cemetery. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Hope Lutheran Cemetery fund.
