| Birth: | Jun., 1844 | | Death: | May 5, 1864 | Born in Page County, Virginia, son of John Shuler and Mary Ann (Kite) Shuler. Brother to Isaac Shuler and Emma Jane Shuler Strole. Michael was a student of Roanoke College at the onset of the Civil War. There the student's raised a company and readied their selves for battle, when their parents found this out the young men were ordered home just before their term ended. Michael's father opposed the war but when "we got into it" and being a loyal man to his home and fireside, he gave one son that yielded his life for the Lost Cause. This was a comment from a letter written by Isaac Shuler posted in "Page News and Courier", August 14, 1926. Michael returned home from school only to join Rippetoe's Infantry company, this company was attached to the 33rd Virginia Infantry as company H. William David Rippetoe was the first Captain of the company but resigned in November 1861. Ambrose Booton Shenk followed Rippetoe, he was killed on March 23, 1862 at the battle of Kernstown; Michael succeeded Shenk in command just 6 months after his 18th birthday. He remained captain for the next two years. The 33rd Infantry also known as the Old Stonewall Brigade saw some fierce fighting at the battle of the Wilderness. They bore the brunt of the Union assault near Saunder's field on May 5, 1864 this is where Shuler was killed. His body was recovered from the field and brought home. He was buried in the family cemetery, later his remains were disinterred then reinterred where they rest today. His brother Isaac Shuler erected the monument in the 1930's.
