HAROLD BECKWITH, WORKED IN SHOE BUSINESS

Graveside services will be held Saturday in Orwell, Pa, for Harold A. Beckwith, a longtime Kenmore resident. He died last Monday (May 28, 2001) on his 101st birthday. William McKinley was president, and the Pan-American Exposition was eagerly awaited in Buffalo when Beckwith was born in New York City. Beckwith lived to see another 18 presidents inaugurated in his lifetime, a span that included the birth of radio, television and computers, the Great Depression, two World Wars and the beginning of a new millennium. He began work at age 17 in a tannery run by Endicott Johnson in Johnson City, moved into the retail end of the shoe business and eventually management, where he stayed until he retired. Beckwith lived in Kenmore for a half-century, moving three years ago to McAuley Residence, Town of Tonawanda, where he died on Memorial Day. His wife, Hannah Roxbury Beckwith, died 30 years ago. He is survived by a daughter, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren.

His wife Hannah's maiden name was Roxby.
Harold and Hannah were married on June 8, 1920 in Johnson City, New York where he worked at Endicott Johnson. Hannah was married before, her name being Williams or Williamson.
