MRS. JAMES BURKETT SUCCUMBS SATURDAY
Mrs. James (Averil) Burkett, 61, who resided south of Dora, died Saturday morning at her home after a brief illness. She was a member of the Dora Church of Christ and had been a resident of the Dora community since 1924 when she moved to the area with her parents. She had long been active in community affairs.
Survivors include the widower, James E. Burkett of the family home south of Dora; a son James Richard Burkett of Muleshoe, Tex.; and daughters, Mrs. Ann Eubank, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Charlotte Smith of Memphis, Tenn. Four grandaughters survive.
Other survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee L. Richards of Dora; four brothers, Lynn and Lee Richards Jr., of Carlsbad; Paul Richards of Tatum and Mack Richards of Dora. Two sisters survive, Mrs. Pansy Evans and Mrs. Rosemary Shackleford, both of Dora. One sister is deceased.
Services for Averil Burkett will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Dora Church of Christ with the minister Doug Hale, officiating. Burial will be in Rest Law Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Gresham, J.D. Hays, Wayne Evans, Ben Fuller, Billy Hays and John Bradley. Honorary pallbearers will be all members of the family and friends.
Note: Averil's body was moved from Rest Lawn Cemetery to Mt. Zion Cemetery, Dora, NM on 8-18-2003.
