Ed Denton died Sunday evening about 6 p.m. in his home at Kenna. He was 80 years old.
He was one of Kenna's oldest residents, having come here at the age of 6 with his parents. He had operated a combination grocery, ranching supplies and clothing store there for most of the years, and for more than 50 years operated the Phillips "66" station in Kenna. The station has been closed for the past ten years.
He also operated a ranch northwest of Kenna where he raised registered Herefords. He also had cattle feeding pens which he used occasionaly through the years, and he was the owner of the Kenna bar.
Jim Southard says Ed was the one who kept the unemployment rate at zero through the years. Anybody could always get a job with Ed Denton.
With him in the home, in the store he operated, were his wife Irene, their daughter Dot Davis, their granddaughter Debbie Allison, and her husband Dan, a grandson, Sammy Moorhead, Mrs. Denton's brother, Kenneth Vaughn, and Gary Ward.
Services were by Wheeler's Mortuary.
Born in Knoxville, Tenn and came to Kenna with his parents, Lucial and Florence Denton, in 1913. Married to Irene Vaughan on October 10, 1925 in Roswell. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Christine Moorhead of Roswell, and Dorothy Davis of Kenna; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother, J. Earl Denton of Portales.
