Birth: 1947
Salt Lake City
Salt Lake County
Utah, USA
Death: Dec. 16, 2006
New Mexico, USA

Keith, a native of Salt Lake City and resident of Los Alamos, passed away after a two-year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. He was predeceased by parents Marie Florence Flowers and Orin Alvin Despain.

Keith was survived by his wife of 31 years, Ann; children: Clareann Despain, Kate M. Despain, Spencer K. Despain, Pratt McHale Despain and Abram S. Despain; siblings: Robert Orin Despain, James Ronald Despain, and Julie Marie Nelson, and their spouses and families, to whom he was known as "Dear Darling Keith."

After graduating from Granite High School in 1965, Keith began his undergraduate education at Brigham Young University with an Honors Program Scholarship. After his freshman year, he served as an LDS missionary in Argentina at the North Argentine Mission. In 1966, he returned to BYU to complete his bachelor of science degree in physics. For his graduate studies at the California Institute of Technology, he received a National Science Foundation Fellowship and a CalTech Milliken Fellowship. He received his doctorate from CalTech in 1975, and completed a post-doc at Arizona State University. Before joining the X-2 group at Los Alamos National Laboratories, he was an assistant professor of astronomy at Haverford College, outside of Philadelphia. As a technical staff member at LANL for 25 years, he was recently named Laboratory Fellow. He was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a devoted father and husband. His greatest joys came from family and faith. He loved working as a physicist at the lab and embraced the term "Wizard of Armageddon."

Visitations were on Dec. 19 & 20 at the Latter Day Saints Church, No. 366 Grand Canyon in White Rock. A funeral service was on Dec. 20, at the same church with burial at Guaje Pines Cemetery.
