Daisy Sylvia Fraga, 92, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at Los Alamos Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 10, 1909, in New Bedford, Mass. Her parents were Joseph Sylvia and Mary Gonsalves. She graduated valedictorian of New Bedford High School in 1927. After graduation she wanted to become a nurse, but in accordance with her mother's wishes, she enrolled at Kinyon's Commercial College (now the Kinyon-Campbell School). After graduation, she worked as a stenographer for the Pairpoint Corporation, she Steuben Glass of its day. She worked in the office for Woodhouse Conservatories, and made bouquets for weddings and funerals.
On Nov 11, 1937, she married Hannibal Fraga. When he moved to Los Alamos in 1944 to join the Manhattan Project, she remained in New Bedford. In the summer of 1946, she set off with a family she had never met on a cross-country trip to Los Alamos, and has been a resident ever since.
She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and a devout churchgoer. She was an enthusiast of standard Schnauzers. She won prizes for her afghans, and she was an accomplished seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 6, 2000.
She is survived by her son Robert of Lawrence, Kan.; two sisters, Mary Ross of New Bedford, Mass, and Hilda Wilson of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2002, at Sombrillo Nursing Facility. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. Burial will follow at Guaje Pines Cemetery at noon.
