Mr. Harold Columbus Bennett, 83 of Mershon, passed away Wednesday evening, February 20, 2013, at the Baptist Village Nursing Home.
Born in Pierce County, GA on June 10, 1929, he was the son of the late James Lawton Bennett, Sr. and Mamie Alice James Bennett.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Blackshear.
He attended Blackshear and Patterson High Schools graduating in 1947 from Patterson where he lettered in basketball, baseball and track.
In 1947 he enlisted in the U. S. Army serving with the Headquarters & Headquarters Service Group in Tokyo, Japan. Following his military tour of dugy, he attended Southern Tech in Atlanta, GA.
He moved to Aiken, S.C. in 1952 where he was employed by E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. at the Savannah River Project for eleven years. It was there that he met his future wife, Mary Whitlock. There were married in 1954.
He returned to Pierce County in 1964 where he had farming interest and also worked for Tuloma Gas Co. In 1966 the family moved to Waycross where he owned and operated Bennett Nitrogen Center representing Phillips Petroleum Co.
In 1971 he became an oil jobber for Union Oil Co. of California (Unocal) and served as President of Bennett Oil Co., Inc. until his retirement in 1997. During this period he was a member of the Georgia Oilmen's Assn. and National Oil Jobbers Assn.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank Assn. for a number of years. Also, he was one of the original charter members of the Blackshear Exchange Club.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, James Newell Bennett, Hugh Dorsey Bennett and James Lawton (J.L.) Bennett, Jr.; three sisters, Dealva Bennett Roberts, Adeline Bennett Meeker, and Melda Bennett Van Iderstyne; four brothers-in-law, Leon Roberts, Jr., Everett Meeker, Jr., J. Reed Severin, and Richard (Dick) Van Iderstyne and three sisters-in-law, Georgie Griner Bennett, Ruth Crump Bennett and O'Letha Raulerson Bennett.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Whitlock Bennett of Mershon; two daughters, Sonya Bennett Clark of Waycross and Wendy Bennett Puryear (Doug) of Mershon; two sons, Keith Bennett (Jamie) of Mershon and Craig Bennett (Mary Beth) of Fernandina Beach, Fl; his grandchildren, Cole Bennett (Kyle) Atlanta, Cody Bennett and Megan Bennett of Amelia Island, FL, Spencer Clark of Wheaton, IL, Mary Courtney Puryear, Madison Puryear and William Bennett Puryear all of Mershon and Matthew Shell of Waycross; and a sister, Mamie Bennett Severin of Waycross. There are many nieces and nephews and all of them are very special.

Visitation for Mr. Bennett will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Funeral arrangements for Mr. Bennett will be held Saturday morning, February 23, 2013, at 11:00 o'clock from the Blackshear First Baptist Church.
The family asks that fellow members of the Supper Club serve as honorary pallbearers. Please meet at the church by 10:30 Saturday morning.
Interment will be in the Ramah Cemetery.
