Demetrius "Micky" Artis, 67, of Downingtown, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2009.

He was the husband of Betty Ann Kelly Artis.

Born Oct. 19, 1941, he was the son of Allene Forte Artis and the late Edward Lee Artis.

He moved to Coatesville as a young boy, attending Coatesville-area schools.

Mr. Artis was postmaster for West Chester University for 22 years until he retired. Following retirement, he worked for Kelly Security (formerly Koons Detective Agency) and was a utility person for Barclay Friends for five years until he became ill.

He was district Deputy Grand Master for the 3rd Masonic District and Trice Potent Master for Charles E. Gordon Consistory #65. He was also a member and past master of Harmony Lodge #21 F&A.M. PHA.

He was a former member of St. Paul's Baptist Church and The Star Social Club of West Chester. He served in the U.S. Army.

He enjoyed his association with the Masons and liked playing pinochle, but his grandchildren brought him the most enjoyment in life.

Surviving besides his mother and his wife of 44 years, Betty Ann Kelly Artis, are four daughters, Anita Richardson (Michael) of Waldorf, Md., Sharon Gallimore (Don) of Valley Township, Sharlene Kelly of Signal Hill, Calif., and Marian Artis (Troy Meeks) of Coatesville; two sons, Rod C. Kelly of Long Beach, Calif., and Brian K. Kelly of Wichita, Kan.; one brother, DeCoris Artis (Louise) of Williamsburg, Va.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two uncles, Hervin Forte of Philadelphia and Lemuel Forte (Eleanor) of West Chester; an aunt, Elizabeth Forte, wife of the late Wesley Forte; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 6, at 10 a.m. at the DeBaptiste Funeral Homes Inc., Worthington and Miner streets, West Chester.

A viewing will be held Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m.

Interment will be in Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer.
