He came to St Joseph thirty-seven years ago and founded the furniture company at the site that is now occupied by the Letts Box and Manufacturing Company. He retired twenty-five years ago. Mr. Varner was born in Senatobia, Miss., the son of the late Maj. C. P. Varner, a Civil War veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lalla Stinson Varner; a daughter, Mrs. J. Robertson Clagett of Kansas City; two brothers, Elliott and Claude Varner, both of Senatobia; and a sister, Mrs. R. E. Hines of Carter, Miss.
The body is at the family home where services will be tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock, the Rev. Robert D. Kerstetter officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery on Ajax road." St Joseph News-Press, April 16, 1941
