Daniel was the son of Johnathan Wesley and Mary Jane Bybee Shelly. He was the fifth of eight children all born in Kentucky. Shortly after the last child was born John and Mary moved their family to the Birch Tree, Shannon County, Missouri area. Daniel met and then married Margaret Elizabeth "Lizzie" Depriest on July 25, 1897 in Birch Tree.
