Obituary, Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, CA), 16-31 May 2007:

Janet Rose Schaub, Sept. 26, 1935 - May 14, 2007

Resident of Walnut Creek. Born the daughter of Samuel and Jean Rose in Detroit on September 26, 1935, Janet Rose Schaub departed this life in her home in Walnut Creek on May 14, a result of complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (A.L.S). Jann, as she preferred to be known, will be greatly missed by her husband of 37 years, Gary Schaub; her brother, Robert A. Rose, M.D. of Irvine, CA; and two nephews, Matthew and Scott. She graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit. She received her B.A. degree from Michigan State University, where she initially honed her interest in theatre and acting, which fulfilled much of her entire life; and later her M.A. from Wayne State University in Detroit. Jann taught for the Detroit Public Schools, and was the first teacher to conduct her curriculum on Detroit Educational Television starting in 1964. She also taught drama at Wayne County Community College, and at Culver-Stockton College in Missouri. After coming to California in 1974, she taught for the Livermore and Acalanes school districts. She is remembered by many as hostess for "Walnut Creek in Focus" on Walnut Creek Cable Channel 6 where she also coordinated community access programming from 1981-1990. Drama and the development of adult programming at her church were central to Jann's life. Her Bay Area stage performances were with Center Repertory Company, ACT Now!, J&L Players, and Town Hall Theatre, as well as at the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church in Walnut Creek. In 2003-04 she appeared in "Fringe Festival" productions in San Francisco. Her final curtain came with a production of "Handy Dandy" at the Mt. Diablo UU Church in early 2006. Since 1987 she has been on the Board of Directors of the Eugene O'Neill Foundation, Tao House. Jann organized and led worship committees, and taught many programs at the Mt. Diablo UU Church, including classes focusing on women's spirituality. She organized an extended family program and the T.I.E. groups ("Together in Exploration") that have been at the core of many MDUUC activities for the past six years. She met bimonthly with her MDUUC women's support group, and since 1989 as a member of "Women With Wings," part of UUA/PCD. Jann got great enjoyment traveling and traveled extensively with her husband and with friends. She will also be missed by her two Tonkinese cats, Alfie and J.B. A celebration of her life will be held at the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church in Walnut Creek on June 2 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The ALS Association, Greater Bay Area Chapter, 131 Steuart St., San Francisco 94105, and the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek 94596.

Acting is not putting up a mask. Each time an actress acts she does not hide; she exposes herself.
