Obituary, Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, CA), 1 Mar 2006:
Elizabeth Spafford Schmidt, Nov. 28, 1915 - Feb. 23, 2006.
Reached the age of 90 before succumbing to pneumonia in Walnut Creek. She outlived her husband of 54 years, Ernest Clifford Spafford of Stockton and Walnut Creek, and her husband of 13 years, Harold E. Schmidt of Stockton and Walnut Creek. Elizabeth was born in San Jose, to Alden Harold Abbott and Helen Adeline Sloane. The family moved in her early years to Stockton, where she obtained a BA degree in biology from the College of the Pacific (now Univ. of the Pacific) and later an MA in education as well. She taught at the secondary level for the Stockton Unified School District. Lovers of travel, the couple used a leave of absence from teaching to take their family to Europe for six months. They later traveled in Asia, India, Russia, Egypt, and South America. Elizabeth also loved classical music and enjoyed San Francisco Symphony performances with her son and her husband. She is survived by her daughter, Edith Gladstone of Berkeley, her son, Alden Spafford of Oakland, and her granddaughter, Emily Gladstone Cole of Moss Beach, Calif. No memorial service is planned.
