Ray S. Long, January 23, 1925 - May 7, 2006

Resident of Walnut Creek Ray Long died peacefully at his home in Walnut Creek. He was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, to Ray Smith Long and Leila Long. During World War II, Ray served in the U.S. Navy as an electronics specialist. He was granted a B.S. degree in Chemistry and a M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley. At an ice skating rink in 1950 he met Catherine Ann Knittle, who he married in 1951. Ray went to work for Dow Chemical in 1950. During his 43 years at Dow Chemical, he became recognized for his huge creative output. He registered 33 patents, ranging from packaged carrots to uranium processing. He was one of only five employees designated as "Senior Scientist". Ray and his wife Catherine shared a joyful and fulfilling 55 years. He was known and loved for his quirky sense of humor. His wide range of interests, shared with his wife, included chemistry, painting, music, hydro-biology, research, and current events. Ray was a popular featured speaker at retirement events. He was a creative and gifted genius. Ray is survived by his loving wife, Catherine; his nieces Barbara Mifkovic, Marilyn Ramirez, Catherine Keig, Carol Keig, and Leslie Keig, and his nephews William E. Keig and Robert McDonald. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law William R. Keig and D.J. McDonald. Memorial Services will be held at the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church on May 27, 2006, at 11:00 A.M.
