Frances Chapin Hovey Feb. 14, 1932 ~ Nov. 18, 2008 Resident of Orinda
Until last week, Fran Hovey was alive, very much alive. Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM), an incurable muscle disease, gradually sapped her strength, but never her considerable smarts, determination, nor zest for life. She savored every opportunity to meaningfully interact with all she met, young and old. Reduced to the use of two fingers, she could still be seen driving her wheelchair at church, concerts, Lamorinda stores and around her beloved Orinda neighborhood. Several close friends helped to sustain her and her family during her 26 year fight. The fourth of Catherine and Art Chapin's five children, Fran grew up in Wellesley Hills, MA across from a skating pond in a very caring neighborhood. A lifelong Unitarian and the granddaughter of the first Civil Service Commissioner ever, she maintained an interest in public affairs throughout life. After getting a zoology degree and many lifelong friends from Mt. Holyoke College, she worked briefly at two Boston hospital laboratories and as an administrator for the RAND and SDC corporations in Santa Monica, CA. It was there she met her husband of 49 years, Scott Hovey, and subsequently focused on raising their three children during successive moves to Bedford, MA; St. Louis, MO and Orinda in 1973. Fran actively supported Planned Parenthood, AAUW, AFS and the Contact Care hotline. While she could, she favored skiing, tennis, hiking and canoeing. She loved nature in all its forms. She also was an ardent fan of Bach, Mozart, PBS, NPR, KDFC, the Red Sox and Tiger Woods. In addition to her husband Scott, Fran is survived by children and spouses Elizabeth Hovey & John Jiler, Marcy & Corey Brown and David & Leslie Hovey, 5 grandchildren and Medy Yangco, her caregiver of 6 years. Her loving siblings Hugh Chapin, Nancy Davis and David Chapin survive her. Beloved sister Barbara Dunlap Nutt died in 2003. A memorial service will be Saturday afternoon, January 17, 2009 at Mount Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church. (925) 934-3135. Memorial contributions may be made to The Myositis Association.
