The Hartford Day Spring, Wednesday, August 29, 1923, page 4, under heading "Covert"
Covert was again shocked by the sudden death Friday afternoon of our undertaker and barber, Vincent L. Calvin. He was sick only two days and his illness not considered dangerous. The funeral service was held at the home Sunday at 4:00 p.m., Rev. D. B. Reed officiating. It was one of the largest funerals held in Covert in a long time which shows the great respect and love felt for our worthy and loyal citizen. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances and he was loved in every home he entered professionally on account of his quiet, sympathetic and kindly disposition. His passing has left a space no one can fill. He was laid to rest in Covert cemetery amid a bank of beautiful flowers. He is survived by his wife, Edith Calvin, two sons, Fernon of South Haven, and J. L. of Hartford, and grandson, Edgar, of South Haven; also by his mother, who lives in Benton Harbor, but who was unable to attend the services, and a brother in northern Michigan. E. M. Zuver, of Hartford, brother of Mrs. Calvin, was present at the services; also many old neighbors from Sodus and friends and family from South Haven and Hartford. Covert turned out enmasse. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family in their deep sorrow which is also a great loss to the many patrons and business associates among whom he moved daily.
