Mrs. E. A. Calvin, Covert, Dies After 3-Week Illness
Mrs. Edith A. Calvin, 83, a funeral director at Covert for many years and mother of J. L. Calvin, local funeral director, died Monday afternoon at South Haven hospital, where she had been a patient for three weeks.
Services were held at 3 p.m. yesterday from the Edith Calvin Funeral home at Covert and burial was in the Covert cemetery. The Rev. William E. Goltz, former pastor of the Covert Congregational church and the Rev. Alfred Allard, present pastor, officiated.
Born in Ohio, Mrs. Calvin came to Michigan with her family in a covered wagon when she was four years old. They settled in Montcalm county near Grand Rapids and several years later moved to Spinks Corners near Benton Harbor. There she lived until 1890, when she married V. L. Calvin at Sodus.
In 1906, the couple moved to Covert, where both were funeral directors. Mrs. Calvin received her embalmer's license in1907 and practiced her profession until failing health in recent years obliged her to depend more and more on her sons to aid in her work. He husband died in 1923.
Surviving are two sons, F. E. Calvin of South Haven and J. L. Calvin of Hartford, both funeral directors; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mrs. Calvin was a member of the Covert Congregational church, Sunshine club, and Covert Hospital guild.
