John Wellman (who married Nancy Webb)was the son of Bennett "Bent" Wellman & Mary Mulligan. Bent was the son of John "JOB" Wellman & Nancy Anne Cox (daughter of Phillip Cox & Susannah Springer).
Bennett's family lived in the area of Wilkes Co., NC for approximately six or seven years (his sixth son, Lewis Harmon, was born there on 02, September 1788). He then moved up into Virginia where he appeared on the tax rolls of Montgomery, VA for the year 1788. There are no extact U.S. census records for Virginia for 1790. Next he moved his family westward to the Clinch Valley in Russell, VA, appearing on the tax lists there between 1796 and 1798. He also bought and sold land there in 1800. Finally, early in 1801 he moved further north and settled near the fork of the Big Sandy River in Mason, VA which later became Floyd, then Lawrence, KY. He settled near present day Louisa, Lawrenece, KY and Fort Gay, Wayne Co., WV. Bennett made this last pioneering emigration with his wife and eight children. Those making the journey this time were Bennett (age 47), his wife, Mary (age 46), daughter, Elizabeth Jane (age 23), son, Joseph Samuel (age 20), four sons born in Wilkes, NC, William David (age 18), Elisha Thomas (age 17), Jeremiah M. (age 16), and Lewis Harmon (age 13), and two sons born in Virginia, Michael (age 11), and James (age 8).
No information has yet been found to prove the location of Bent Wellman's burial. Some say they are buried on the Northrup farm near an Indian graveyard just south of Louisa, Lawrence Co., KY. Another states that Bennett is buried in West Virginia where the road forks at Highway 37 and Tolsia Highway at a place called "Wellman Town."
