Researchers: Note that John & Rachel named 4 of their daughters for his sisters: Elizabeth, Lydia, Martha and Lucinda. So this makes researching women in different generations with the same Christian and maiden names very interesting.

--------------------------------------------------------
John & Rachel were very patriotic since 3 of their sons are named for famous Americans: George Washington, Andrew Jackson and General Nathaniel Greene.
--------------------------------------------------------

John and Rachel lost 2 sons, George Washington Bovender and General Greene Bovender, in battle during Civil War. They also lost 2 sons-in-law, Albert Poindexter and Abraham Murphy. during CSA service.
----------------------------------------------------
After Rachel's death in 1845, John "Jackie" Bovender then married Arabella Farrington in Surry Co NC on 2 Feb 1847, Book A, page 639, Marriage Bonds Book, Surry Co NC

Arbell's tombstone is next to John's but it faces the opposite direction. Arbell died Mar. 11, 1880.

Their children were:
1. William Elder Bovender (1847 - 1901)

If you are researching family history, send an email to us at address shown on our Contributor's page. The Bovender family is confusing to trace because John fathered a total of 18 children who lived to adulthood and those children "went forth and did likewise". The Bovenders had a tendency to name their children for their grandparents, aunts and uncles so you see multiple family members in different generations with the same name. For example, Jackie & Rachel named several their daughters for Jackie's mother and his sisters: Mary, Elizabeth, Lydia, Lucinda & Martha. Those names appear in the family tree again for several generations after Jackie & Rachel. About 3-4 generations down from John the tracking gets tricky because the distant cousins began to intermarry. So the Wardens, Adamses and Hutchens and Dinkins all mixed together. Untangling them reminds me of trying to untangle Christmas tree lights even though naming a child for a beloved family member is a wonderful thing.

Jackie Bovender donated the land for the present-day Union Cross Friends Cemetery in Yadkin County NC. He selected his grave site and, ironically, he was the first person buried in the cemetery. Many of his descendants still live in the area and attend Union Cross Friends Meeting House.
