Sarah E. Howes was born August 14th 1862, in Calvert, Maryland, to John Webster Howes (1836-1891) and Wilhelmina "Willie" Ann Lyons (1839-1921). On December 11th 1888, she married Virgel Jerome Birckhead in Calvert, Maryland. The couple had twin girls, one of whom, Willie Alice, died in infancy. The other, Mary Eleanor, died in 1963.
