CRASH ON THE N.Y. Central
Two sections of a passenger train collided on the N.Y.Central Railroad near Palatine Bridge at midnight, Sept. 27, killing four persons: Wm. H. Manning, of Marquette, Mich., Rev. Prentice Deveure of Dayton, O., Miss Sarah Boyle of Westport, N.Y., who was Mrs. Wm. Manning's maid, and Charles Franklin, a car porter. The accident was caused by the stoppage of the first section, owing to the bursting of a steam chest of the locomotive. In about two minutes the second section came up and crashed into the rear, four cars and one locomotive being wrecked. It is claimed that the violation of the following rule of the road was the cause of the accident--the rule applying to cases where trains are stopped from any unusual cause. Many passengers were injured.
