Oliver James Maddix was born to Wiley Marcus Maddix and Mary Frances Hughes on August 8, 1895 in Iron City, Alabama. Delivered the third son, he had two older brothers.
By the time he was 4 years old he had two younger sisters living in the Iron City home, along with his widowed Grandmother Julia Ann. His father is dead, and his youngest sister only 10 months old. They live next door to his Uncle James and Aunt Eula. They are very trying times.
His mother then marries Edward Thomas Bowling (6-11-1881) who is just 13 years older than Oliver. His mother and step-father have 8 more children.
On May 6, 1924 he married Maggie Mae Mitchell. He was 27 years old and she was 18. He was 5ft 10in, weighed 137 pounds and was a lineman for the Alabama Power Co., in Alabama City (Gadsden). It was a first marriage for both of them. They had three children. Margaret Louise, Mary Jo, and Oliver James Maddix, Jr. In 1929, almost 2 years after the birth of his only son tragedy would strike again, this time he would lose his young wife. Widowed, with three small children, he could not work and take care of them alone. At that point he let his wife's mother (Louisana Mitchel) take Margaret, proposedly because his mother in law was up in age, and Margaret, being the oldest, would be less trouble and possibly a help. Mary Jo and Buddy (ages 4 and 2 respectively) went to Gramma Bowlings along with Oliver, so that his sister Wyley, could help care for his youngest two children. He also had 3 half-sibling still living at his mothers. Two were old enough to help with his children and one, Nettie was the same age as Oliver Jr. (Buddy).
Within just a year or so Oliver remarried. His second wife would be Vera Albright. It was a second marriage for her. She would become the step-mother of his children. Oliver moved Vera into their home on Center Road in rural Etowah county, taking Mary Jo and Buddy with them. They had no children. His daughter, Margaret, was still living with her Gramma Mitchel and did not immediately move. Margaret did not return to the home of Oliver until after the death of her grandmother at which time she moved in with her best friend, Grace. It was upon the death of Grace's mother that Margaret returned to the home of her father. By 1940 Mary Jo had left home and had her first child at 14 or 15.
It was not until the early 1950s that Sandy relocated to Florida. There he and Vera lived several different places, including state owned land where they worked the fire tower.
Oliver lived to see some of his grandchildren born. It is believed that he died to to complications from contracting the mumps while the grandchildren were visiting from Texas.
