51th Indiana Infantry, Co "C": Mustered in Dec. 14, 1861, out Dec 14, 1864. Organized at Indianapolis on 10-11-1861, went to KY for instruction. In February of 1862, they marched with Buell's army toward Nashville and then the TN River, where it arrrived too late to participate in the battle of Shiloh. It took an active part in the siege of Corinth, and in the movement to Stevenson. It served with Buell through the KY campaign, and in December marched toward Murfreesboro with Rosecrans's army. The regiment was engaged in the battle of Stone River, Dec. 31, 1862, and Jan 1 and 2, 1863, losing 5 killed, 36 wounded and 8 missing. Many other adventures, then the battle of Day's Gap, in which the 51st lost 31 killed and wounded. Captured near Gaylesville, AL, and consigned to rebel prisons and treated with great severity. After awhile they were paroled for exchange and went back to Indianapolis. (This regiment was engaged in battles too numerous to list here. For full detail see the 1885 History of Hendricks County.)
