Leon Bowles was born Sep 23, 1914, in Mumfordsville, KY, son of George and Sallie Jaggers Bowles. They had a total of 15 children.
Goldie Mae Crecelius was born Feb 23, 1923, the 10th child of Doctor Strouse and Minnie Iona Rainbolt Crecelius.
Leon and Goldie were married on Aug 28, 1940, and they were blessed with 9 children (listed above).
They raised their large family on a farm in Ellettsville, Indiana. The three oldest sons served in the US Army – Raymond in National Guard, Ronnie in Germany, and Nick in VietNam. Linda has a beautiful voice and had a singing career; she recorded many of her songs on tape.
From a child’s perspective, I remember that Aunt Goldie always had very long hair and she had lots of kids. She never wore make-up, and always seemed glad to be visiting. She was always smiling. She was a devout Christian, an excellent cook, enjoyed flowers and most of all, she loved and enjoyed her family. Goldie’s family was very close with her sister, Alma Harbeson’s family of 9 children. The children from both families were close in age, and have remained close through the years.
Uncle Leon was killed in a two-car accident on Hwy 37 bypass on March 11, 1976 at the age of 61. Following the death of Uncle Leon, Aunt Goldie worked at Cook, Inc, retiring in 1993.
On Oct 3, 1999, their oldest son, Raymond died of leukemia, at the age of 58.
Aunt Goldie died on Nov 5, 2005 at the age of 82. She and Uncle Leon are buried at Methodist Cemetery in Ellettsville, Indiana.
