Even In Death Dogs Protect Aged Chinese

Graveside rites were conducted today in the Chinese Cemetery for Gong Chong Sing, 76, also known as Jackson Gong, who died Tuesday in his home at 12_6 F Street, surrounded by his six mongrel dogs. The burial was under the direction of Stephens & Bean.

For years Gong picked up all the stray dogs in his neighborhood and made them his companions. He also had a bald faced monkey that romped through the house.

A few months ago the city health authorities were compelled to take from Gong nearly twenty mongrel dogs when they found them ill fed and not vaccinated against rabies.

Friends said Gong grieved himself to death over the loss of his canine friends; but Coroner J. N. Lisle attributed the aged man's death to heart disease.

Six dogs formed a circle around the body of their master but made no attempt to harm coroner's deputies as they entered the kitchen where Gong's body was found by neighbors lying on the floor.

Gong was born in China. He was a familiar character in West Fresno where he lived for more than thirty five years, pushing a vegetable cart around the city and amusing children with the monkey that accompanied him. Old age forced his retirement a few years ago.

He came to California from his native land more than half a century ago. There are no known survivors.
