Gene, along with his nine sisters and seven brothers, grew up on a farm in New Baltimore. He joined the U.S. Army in 1941 and served in the European theatre during World War II until he was medically discharged in 1945. His feet had been frozen on a troop train.
On April 5, 1945 he married Ruth Frye from Waterford, VA and they were married for 67 years. They had two sons, Larry and Tom.
Beginning in 1966, he and Ruth lived in Africa for 4 ½ years where he worked maintaining the refrigeration and air conditioning for the Army. It was there that he learned to fly Cub Cadet airplanes. He was an amateur radio operator and an amateur photographer. He retired as a civilian with the Army Security Agency in 1969 and then started a construction company.
In addition to his wife and two sons, he is survived by a brother, Mitchell and seven sisters, Ruth, Christine, Margaret, Helen, Doris, Patsy and Peggy. He also leaves six grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 3 from 1 pm until the service at 2 pm at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton. Rev. Gordon Hensley will officiate.
Interment to follow in Broad Run Baptist Church Cemetery.
