His father was William B. Armstrong and his mother, Maude Estelle (Turner) Armstrong.
Herb always lived in Harrington where he grew up with a great love of farming. He graduated from the Harrington High School.
He married Louella Zicha 2 October 1937 Harrington, Lincoln County, WA.
They lived on the family farm which was southeast of Harrington. Here they raised wheat, cattle and he also raised and trained thoroughbred colts. In 1960 Herb was named Washington's "Turf Man of the Year.
He was an architect and an inventor. He had patents on machinery he had "invented" to fit a situation. He belonged to the Bright Hope Chapter, No. 79, of O.E.S., Harrington; Acacia Lodge F and AM, Davenport and the Washington Horse Breeders Assoc.
He died at his home in Harrington,
