John was born in Germany and was naturalized in 1881 at about age 6. His family lived near the Holland border in Germany. He married Minnie Sophia Joern on 22 February 1899 in Chicago, Illinois. He moved the family to Tampico, Illinois in September 1911, but his children moved back to Chicago after their mother Minnie died in 1918. John died in Round Grove or Deer Grove, Illinos; he is buried at Tampico Memorial Cemetery, Tampico, Whiteside Co., IL near his wife Minnie, and son Henry; however we find no gravestone.
A US Census for son Henry's family and John's obit both say John was born in PA (Pittsburg), but in the US Census for John's family (1910) it says he was born in Germany.
