His father immigrated to Chicago around 1890 and his mother's family about 1883. The family mainly spoke German and Henry had to learn English as a second language to attend school. At that time, their name was spelled Kolbe. In 1911, they moved to Tampico, Illinois. In high school, Henry was a leading member of the Glee Club Choir; his mother died right before his graduation from Tampico high school in 1918. The family moved back to the Chicago area where his siblings lived with their Grandma Joern and Henry joined the Army toward the end of WWI. After the war, he worked at the Sun Times newspaper, was in the National Guard - his unit was called on during the Chicago riots - and then he moved back to Tampico. He married Lois M. Denison on 4 July 1920 in Tampico, Whiteside Co., Illinois and they had one child. In 1931, they bought the Tampico Tornado newspaper from one of Lois's cousins which they published until 1966.
