Dorothy Florence Burke, 89, of Mattoon, passed from this life at 4:05 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, 2009, at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Harmony Center surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial celebrating her life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 320 North 21st Street in Mattoon with Father Dennis Kollross celebrating. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:30- 8:00 p.m. on this (Tuesday) evening at the Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Avenue in Mattoon with a Parish Prayer Service beginning at 5:00 p.m. Dorothy was born January 24, 1920, in Mattoon, a daughter of Benjamin and Hattie (Forsman) Edwards. She married Michael J. Burke on December 5, 1942. He passed away in October 1970. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Don and Jim Edwards; and sister, Mary Edwards. Survivors include her four sons, Michael J. Burke and wife Carole of Mattoon, Patrick J. Burke and wife Marian of Houston, Texas, Timothy L. Burke and wife Vickie of Evanston, Illinois, and Daniel M. Burke and wife Ruth of Grover, Missouri; one sister, Lois Robinson of Mattoon; thirteen grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Burke was formerly employed at Associated Spring retiring after twenty-four years. She was also formerly employed at Brown Shoe Company. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Dorothy was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Memorial gifts in her honor are suggested to Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church.
