He was retired from Derst Baking Company with 20 years of service. He was owner and operator of several J&M Handi Checks in Toombs County. He was a former member of the Vidalia Jaycees, a member of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia and a member of the Alston Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Melba Wilkes Allen, Vidalia; one daughter, Donna Dale Allen Hughes; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry L. and Ruth Allen and Stacey Boyd and Annie Allen; five grandchildren and spouses, Christi and Brad Gowen, Gena and Mike Todd, Mell Allen, Jeremy and Chris Jarriel and Brandon Allen; three sisters, Pauline Odom, Orlando, Florida, Betty Morris, Uvalda and Barbara Hart, Alston; and three brothers, M.L. Allen, Garden City, Royce Allen, Vidalia, and Jerry Allen, Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Memorial services were conducted Wednesday, August 2, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Cobb and Rev. Henry Dowd officiating. Interment followed in Lyons City Cemetery Friday, August 4, 2006.
